Modist Design specializes in creating custom interior and exterior installations for your home or commercial space, applying the elements of good design to suit your space, personal needs and style. Owner operator Matthew Thomsen has a Master’s Degree in Architecture from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has practiced architecture at several of Bozeman’s leading firms over the last decade. Modist Design allows Matthew to combine his passion for design with his enjoyment of hands on craftsmanship – enabling him to see a project from concept to realization.

Fences, gates, decks, railings, raised beds designed for your property.
Design & Drafting Services
Design is our favorite part of the process. We work closely with our clients to understand their needs, then provide drawings using SketchUp and AutoCAD to help visualize the project.

We asked Matthew to create a steel firewood holder for our living room. We had been bouncing around ideas for a long time, and Matthew was able to refine our basic idea into a design that looked good and served our needs. The finished product is exactly what we had hoped to have.

The porch that Matthew designed and built for us transformed an unusable side yard to THE most used part of our yard. We had some ideas for the porch, but Matthew took those ideas and ran with them creating something far better than we had imagined. Matthew’s gift for combining form and function has changed how we live in our house - and outside our house.

Matthew has designed and built several furniture pieces for our home. He has a keen eye for design, and creates attractive accent pieces that marry form and function. Each piece is truly a work of art that fits our specific needs for the space. He also designed and fabricated a one-of-a-kind steel mailbox that our mailman says is ‘the coolest mailbox ever’.
